Spectacular beaches that are home to fur seals and crested penguins, untouched lowland rainforests spread between pristine lakes and rivers which drain the snow capped Southern Alps. Few places on Earth can match the unique natural setting of the Wilderness Lodge Lake Moeraki in the heart of the 2.7 million hectare South West New Zealand World Heritage Area.

Husband and wife owners, teacher Anne Saunders and biologist Dr Gerry McSweeney arrived at Lake
Moeraki (Maori translation: "to sleep or dream by day") in 1989 from Wellington where Gerry was
director of New Zealand's largest environmental organisation. They set up the Lodge to help protect
the rainforests and to share this extraordinary natural setting with visitors. We invite you to
share their warm hospitality and enjoy a unique wilderness experience.
The surroundings are untouched wilderness but the Lodge itself offers every comfort to help the weary traveller to relax after an active day outdoors.
Landscaped into the rainforest are 18 modern lodge rooms each with private facilities that sleep 2. There are also 2 family cottages.
Lawns sculptured down to river's edge where there are jumping trout, waterbirds and stunning reflections give the Riverside Restaurant and Moeraki Lounge one of the country's finest restaurant view.

Every evening we offer a special activity:- recreate the pioneering days with the locals, music evenings, a short walk to see the glow worms and the Southern Cross or short talks on penguins and the rainforest. Around the log fire you will make new friends and learn about New Zealand and its people as you plan your next day's adventures.

The Lodge is committed to the protection of the environment. We run our own hydro-electric generator
for all power, have an active energy efficiency programme, recycle all possible rubbish and work
in partnership with the Conservation Department who administer the surrounding World Heritage
rainforests.
From the Lodge we are also gathering scientific information on seals, penguins, plants, birds, earthquakes and rainfall to help in the future management and protection of this area.
Lake Moeraki is considered New Zealand's foremost nature lodge. You can do your own thing - fish for brown trout, canoe the gentle lake waters or walk the network of Lodge and World Heritage rainforest and coastal tracks.
Alternatively every day, year-round we offer guided wilderness adventure programmes. Join a small group and accompany our skilled nature guides led by Gerry. On safe, well planned adventures you will get close to wildlife, learn about the forest, experience amazing scenery and friendly company.

Wilderness Seal and Penguin Walks depart daily around the tides to explore the white sand beaches, blue sea, waterfalls, seals (all year) and penguins (in season) of the Knights Point coastline. Moderate fitness is required for this exciting trip (5 hours). An easier alternative wilderness seacoast, rainforest, Hector's Dolphin and historic goldminers walk is also available (3 hours).
Rainforest Discovery Walks leave at dawn or mid afternoon and explore the ferns, orchids, giant trees and birds of the rainforest. We walk in untracked bush and handfeed our tame eels! (1 hour)
