Craters of the Moon and Wairakei Geothermal Borefield Information Centre and Power Station. Meanwhile Rotorua, an hours drive away, is New Zealand's geothermal wonderland and a major international tourist destination. A day trip to Rotorua could include visits to thermal attractions along with The Agrodome, Rainbow Springs and the Buried Village, to name but a few. Or try the Huka Lodge Experience or the Huka Lodge White Island Experience Huka Lodge Experience ~ Begin your experience by either trawling for trout, or trying your hand at clay pidgeon shooting or swimming in the crystal clear waters of Lake Taupo. Returning to Huka Lodge where a helicopter awaits to take you along the eastern edge of Lake Taupo towards the majestic Kaimanawa mountain ranges. Land by the crystal waters of the Rangatiki River, take a short walk to one of the many secluded pools which are home to some of New Zealand's largest Rainbow trout. Reboard the helicopter for the remainder of the flight, continuing West along the Kaimanawas towards Mt Tongariro, Mt Ngauruhoe and the snow capped peaks and crater lake of Mt Ruapehu. On a clear day visibility exceeds 50km. Descend from the mountains, head towards the Western Bays of Lake Taupo where your pilot will set the aircraft down on a remote rock shelf where a well appointed motor launch awaits your arrival. A sumptuous lunch and a chilled bottle of New Zealand wine will be served aboard the launch on your cruise back to Taupo. Huka Lodge White Island Experience ~ White Island from Huka Lodge is a journey that includes some of New Zealand's most beautiful scenery and prominent volcanic highlights. Along the way we enjoy views of "The Wai O Tapu Thermal reserve". Mount Tarawera appears approximately half way into the journey and from above the now dormant volcano we enjoy expansive views of mighty domes and craters formed during the 1886 eruption. Leaving Mount Tarawera we track past Mount Edgecombe before crossing the coast for White Island. On the Island your are guided on a tour, conditions permitting, that takes you past steaming fumaroles and bubbling activity to the edge of the crater lake. After leaving the Island the return trip takes you to Rotorua, where you land on Mokoia Island. The historic Island is the home to some of New Zealand's rarest native birds including the North Island Robin, Saddleback and Stichbird as well as other less endangered natives such as the Tui.
