Christchurch and the Canterbury region are famous for their natural beauty with
a wealth of activities to enjoy.
The “Garden City”, Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island and has a
lively entertainment scene, strong cultural heritage, stunning parks and gardens, many sporting
facilities and great shopping.
Settled by the English, their influence is very evident in the English Gothic architecture and
other buildings, the lazy loops of the Avon river, the parks and gardens with their oaks and daffodils,
the statues of great figures throughout the city. Christchurch boasts it's own tramway and Casino
and prides itself almost equally on it's arts, sports, history and gardens.
Among some of Christchurch’s ‘must sees’ are the weekend market at the Arts
Centre, Christchurch Cathedral, Hagley Park and the Botanical Gardens, the International Antarctic
Centre, Christchurch Art Gallery, Canterbury Museum, Orana Park (New Zealand’s largest wildlife
reserve), Air Force World and the Christchurch Casino.
Christchurch also boasts the most golf courses in New Zealand within the city limits with more
than 20 golf courses within an hour's drive.
